Description
The Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Historical Society is a relatively new organization conceived by a small group of Island residents. This group’s passion for the island, its history and a strong desire to preserve and share the past that is Harsens Island and the St. Clair Flats has driven them to a vision of creating a museum celebrating the Island.

In May of 2011, the museum was opened in the old fire hall in downtown San Souci on Harsens Island. The Harsens Island / St. Clair Flats Historical Society’s mission is to collect, protect, preserve and share with the public the unique historical artifacts and information that represents the diverse cultural composition of the people that occupied the area of the St. Clair River Delta that is Harsens Island and the St. Clair Flats.

Adorning the lawn at the Museum is the ‘Propeller and Anchor’ that once served the Steamer John N. Glidden, sunk in 1903 after a collision in the Government Canal at the St. Clair Flats.

They direct special emphasis on education, bringing exciting cultural activities to the Island for all who wish to share the rich cultural history of the people who lived there.  So, take a bite out of local lore and visit the Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Society Historical Museum today!
