Honoring the memory of the victims of the Lake Huron Water Tunnel Explosion of December 11, 1971, one of the deadliest industrial accidents in Michigan history. At 3:11 PM - 22 union tradesmen died beneath Lake Huron in a single massive explosion.
We are hosting a solemn event to pay tribute to these brave people who died while building our infrastructure. There will be a brief program and tribute ceremony where affected community members may find comfort with others who shared this traumatic experience.
We invite the community, people who were affected by the tragedy, and the general public to join us in Fort Gratiot County Park, where a dedicated monument and historical marker sit above the tunnel, which is still in operation and supplying fresh water to an estimated 4 million people.
There is no cost to participate - and refreshments will be provided.
This event is sponsored by LIUNA and our signatory contractors, we are a Union of construction craft laborers. 21 of the 22 victims were brothers in our Union family, we will do our absolute best to treat their memory with dignity and respect. Efforts were made to contact surviving families prior to announcing this event, but for any families we failed to contact - please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or just to connect.
