Clay-Algonac-Harsens Island

Sharing a border and a woven history of nautical lore, Clay Township and the City of Algonac unite to welcome visitors to their naturally diverse area.  Their waterways and natural surroundings make these communities a destination for sportspersons, paddlers, and nature lovers.

Clay encompasses hundreds of small islands teeming with game species, songbirds, and aquatic wildlife. It also includes the charming Harsens Island, accessible by ferry from Algonac

Algonac embraces its nautical contributions, being the birthplace of Chris-Craft boats and the former home of Gar Wood. Situated on the St. Clair River, it has earned the nickname “The Pickerel Capital of the World.”

While in downtown Algonac, stroll along 1,800 feet of boardwalk, and visit the Algonac-Clay Historical Museum. The museum shares local history and includes models of locally-built pleasure boats. There is also ferry access to Walpole Island, Canada.

Algonac State Park sits on the banks of the St. Clair River, and it’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy freighter watching. Visitors to Clay and Algonac will discover an up north atmosphere without the commute. Clay is also recognized by the State of Michigan as the “Sturgeon Angling Capital,” so there’s no better place to catch a Lake Sturgeon!
